The Final 48

We’re about to hit the final 48 hours of the campaign, and we’re about to crack 1000 backers. That’s pretty unbelievable. An enormous, heart-felt thank you from me. And, if what I know about kickstarter is true, then we’ll probably add a few more in the next two days.

I’ll save the sobby / waterworks stuff for later, but it really means a lot to me that this thing I’ve made has resonated with so many people. It also has opened up the world of design as something, maybe, more than just a hobby. I’d love to be able to keep making games for you.

Anyway, here’s what to expect from me in the next few days:

  • I’m trying to keep my schedule open and I’ll do my best to stay connected to help answer questions. If anyone is comfortable answering questions, please, feel free!
  • As the campaign finalizes and closes, I’m waiting to hear back from a few potential manufacturers. Since it is Gen Con week, everything moves a bit slowly.
  • Due to the influx of backers and support, tons of people have started playing Outpost 18. The community has offered a lot of feedback that I am confident will create a better game. The job now is parsing through that content and finalizing the design.
  • I want to get an official how-to-play up, but due to travel, it might have to wait. I know it would be a big help to potential backers.

I’ve started a discord for anyone who wants to join in and discuss the game. Feel free to chatif that’s your thing.

Here’s a cool article from Kurt at Meeple Mountain reviewing his first impressions with Outpost 18. You should give it a read when you get a chance — he does excellent work.

Here’s some card-blanks, for anyone who wants to make their own cards. I’ll add icons to the file later, but feel free to copy and paste from the PNP. Note that these cards use the new design with an optional spot for passive abilities.

And, as a thank-you to all the new followers on instagram and BGG: here’s Silo and me going head-to-head.

More Silo content coming, cat fans.

Funded in 2 hours. 100 backers in 12 hours. Wow!

100 Backers in 12 hours. That’s pretty amazing! I’m floored by the support and I’m really excited to get this game out to everyone. And I’m thrilled that I’ll be able to give Mike the go ahead to start making some cool leather cases. I’ll post some more content through updates to show you how those come together.

I want to highlight something: while I am happy where the game is, I am very open to feedback, suggestions, and ideas. Kickstarter is about making something great together, not about pre-ordering product, so feel free to message me if you have comments that you think could create a better experience. As noted in the campaign, while the game is nearing the finish line, the last 5% can make an enormous difference.

Here’s a great thread someone started on BGG with rulebook suggestions/clarifications. I’ll try my best to respond and keep the communication open.

Next steps, I’ll be posting a FAQ with some of the great questions I’ve been getting. I want to make sure everyone is as informed as possible.

I’ll publish the next article in my BGG blog today, too, so you can check that out if you are in to some design theory.

Three days in, and I’ve got a lot of games to make!
over 4 years ago – Wed, Jul 31, 2019 at 07:46:22 PM

What a great start to this story.

After three days, we are over 250+ backers and 300+ games. I can’t say thank you enough. My goal with this campaign was to get this project I believe in out to as many people as possible in an affordable way by doing something different. But I think there’s something more, there — with enough traction, we can encourage other designers to think differently about micro games and fulfillment, and we can make gaming more approachable for everyone.

Anyway, we are probably entering the expected “long night” of mid-campaign. Here’s how you can help:

  • Share the campaign with friends, or in your preferred online community. There’s nothing like your personal recommendation to get someone on board. It really does make a difference.
  • Follow along on instagram, or on Board Game Geek. The added presence helps build momentum
  • Be a part of the conversation over on the Board Game Geek forums. I was surprised to hear that a lot of designers shy away from the chat — I want to encourage as much conversation as possible! I’d love to have you there.

Thanks for everything.

1000% Funded. That’s a big percentage.

When I started this campaign, I set out to make a hundred or so games, mostly for friends and family. I still get to do that — but I’ve gained a few hundred friends along the way.

Thank you so much for the support so far. I truly believe that micro games have the potential to do something unique in the tabletop space. By supporting Outpost 18, you are helping me prove that there’s room for a crunchy strategy game in the micro world.

I’m not here to make a quick dollar — this is a way for me to build an audience and a following, and in order to do that, I have to make a great first impression. That’s what I intend to do. Working together with you guys, I’ll put forward the best version of this game I can, and get it sent all over the world. All along the way I will be transparent and honest, because that’s how you treat friends.

And I am thankful to have so many new friends along so far.

In the spirit of thankfulness, I wanted to pay one forward. My friend Nathan has done an excellent job with his campaign, The Blessed Dark. If you are in to micro games with a ton of style, you should check his out. Be quick, though — he’s on his last stretch.

$10,000 CAD in funding, and we’ve got a week to go!
over 4 years ago – Wed, Jul 31, 2019 at 07:44:23 PM

Thought this was a pretty important milestone to highlight. We’ve picked up 700 people so far! Pretty amazing, since the original plan was for maybe, y’know, a hundred or so.

In most kickstarter campaigns, the last 3 days provide a huge chunk of the funding. The more the merrier! I’m hoping one day I’ll see a copy of the game out in the wild at a bar table or a coffee shop. Hey, if you end up being that person, I’m buying you a beer (or a latte).

So as we slide in to the back third of the campaign, what do you guys think? Here’s what I plan on adding to the page this week:

- I’ve got a small update to the PNP & Rulebook in the works, so the latest version will be up and running shortly. Some wording changes and clean-up.

- I’ve just added a play-through video with the Molten Meeple crew in the “How to Play” section on the main page. Check it out. Should help demonstrate how the game feels and looks on the table.

- Silo has been dancing so I’ve got a cat video to share. Seems fitting towards the end of the campaign.

Another plug for the little community we got going on at boardgamegeek.com. Outpost 18 has its own forum for discussing the game, offering critiques for the rules and cards, and logging game sessions. Everyone there is pretty great, and helping make the game the best it can be.

Thanks for everything, everyone.

Onward we go.
